Come out from Tuesday to Sunday and take a Historic Walking Tour of Ybor City. Tours start from the Vincente Martinez-Ybor statue at Centro Ybor on Seventh Avenue. The tour runs daily from Tuesday to Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and at noon on Sunday. Your walking tour includes a walk down “La Septima Avenida” (Seventh Avenue) or “Broadway,” as residents know it. Seventh Avenue is not just a street but the heart of a special community, and has been designated one of the American Planning Association’s (APA) Great Streets in America for its history and character. Known as Tampa’s Latin Quarter for over a century, Ybor City is an exotic blend of aromas, flavors, sights and sounds. From the scent of roasting Cuban coffee early in the morning to the rhythms of Latin music late into the night, Ybor is a feast for the senses. There is plenty of parking in Ybor City and don’t forget about the TECO streetcars! In Ybor City you can choose from a variety of cuisine – Spanish, Cuban, Italian, Greek and French – just by strolling down La Setima, the main street of the Historic District. Share authentic tapas and a pitcher of Spanish sangria in a café atmosphere reminiscent of a Mediterranean village. Founded by Vicente Martinez-Ybor as a cigar-manufacturing center, Ybor City today is one of only two National Historic Landmark Districts in Florida. Red brick buildings, wrought iron balconies and narrow brick streets give it an old-world charm. Prices for the tour are $15 for adults, $5 ages 6-12, five and younger are free.

If you haven’t been to to see Plant Hall, then this is great opportunity to see it and help support the restoration as well.  The Tampa Bay Hotel was built by railroad magnate Henry B. Plant.  The Moorish Revival architectural theme was selected by Mr. Plant because of its exotic appeal to the widely traveled Victorians that would be his primary customers. The hotel has six minarets, four cupolas and three domes. In the early 90′s, all were restored to their original stainless steel state.

Voluntary Prekindergarten Program in Florida

March 09, 2011 By: maclaura Category: children, News No Comments →

The Voluntary Prekindergarten Program (VKP), a State of Florida program that started in 2005, provides all 4-year-olds in Florida the opportunity to quality prekindergarten programs. VKP is designed to prepare children for kindergarten and develop the skills they need to become good readers and successful students. VKP includes standards for literacy skills, strict accountability, appropriate cirricula, substantial instruction periods, manageable class sizes, and qualified instructors. Parents have the option of enrolling children in school-year program that consists of 540 instructional hours or a summer program that consists of 300 instructional hours. The MacDill Child Development Center #2 will be conducting a 2011 summer VKP program that has 24 slots available. The program is first-come, first-serve based on the date of the application. So if you moving to MacDill this summer or are currently stationed at MacDill, this is a great opportunity to take advantage of. The tentative dates are 13 June to 12 August from 8:30am to 4:30pm. The cost is $15 per week. Age eligibility for VKP is for a child born between 2 Sep 2005 to 1 Sep 2006 and has not previously participated in a VKP program. The child must be a dependent of a military member or civilian attached to MacDill AFB. A child can only participate in VKP once. A child who is eligible to enter kindergarten cannot participate in VKP. If you have any questions about eligibility, you can call (813) 740-4713. To sign up, call (813) 828-5750. If you don’t want to use the MacDill, then there are many other locations that provide VKP. Although MacDill will charge a small weekly fee, the actual program is free!

Dunedin Mardi Gras Parade 8 March

March 08, 2011 By: maclaura Category: Events No Comments →

The Dunedin Mardi Gras Parade tonight is a big street party with a “Who Do Da’ Voodoo” parade featuring colorful floats, local celebrities, beads and plenty of beer, wine and food for sale. The free and family-friendly Dunedin Mardi Gras celebrates its 20th year! The event runs from 5pm to 11pm with the parade starting at 7pm. At Pioneer Park, live entertainment will be provided by Swamp Logic who will play New Orleans funk and blues from 5:30pm to 7 pm, followed at 8 pm by headliner Curley Taylor and Zydeco Trouble from Louisiana. There will also be arts and crafts vendors selling their wares along Main Street. On Douglas Avenue, the aroma of seafood gumbo, jambalaya and other foods will create a Fat Tuesday atmosphere for the Mardi Gras celebration downtown from 5pm to 11 pm. Last year’s event drew 15,000 people during a chilly night, but expect more tonight with better temperatures. The parade with at least 25 entries will begin at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium on Douglas Avenue at 7 pm and run north toward Skinner Boulevard. Beer, wine, food and souvenirs will be available for purchase. Parking is free in city lots. No pets, coolers or glass bottles. Dunedin is located across Tampa Bay from MacDill AFB, just north of Clearwater. Dunedin is located in Pinellas County. The name comes from the Scots Gaelic Dùn Èideann meaning Edinburgh. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 36,632. Dunedin is home to several beaches, including Dunedin Causeway, Honeymoon Island, and Caladesi Island State Park, which is consistently rated among the best beaches in the world. Dunedin is one of the few open waterfront communities from Sarasota to Cedar Key where buildings do not completely obscure the view; a 1-mile stretch of Edgewater Drive (also known as Alternate US 19) south of downtown offers views of St. Joseph Sound, Clearwater Beach, and Caladesi Island. The quaint, but thriving downtown business district has become a model for many other west-central Florida cities. It is striking in comparison to neighboring Florida communities for its absence of commercial signage and corporate franchise restaurants and retail stores.
