Grand Opening Tampa Museum of Art 6 February
The brand new Tampa Museum of Art has its grand opening today. The festivities start at 10:30am with the speeches from Museum officials and the Pam Iorio the Mayor of Tampa. Doors open at 11am and close at 7pm. The Museum building has 66,000 square feet that includes eight galleries providing 14,000 square feet for art exhibitions. Located on Ashley Street in downtown Tampa, the Museum is along the banks of the Hillsborough River directly across from the University of Tampa. From 11am-3pm there will be free hands-on art activities on the Rothman Plaza outside the Museum for all ages. Opening shows feature art by Henri Matisse. Prints, paintings and sculpture by Matisse are included. The Tampa Museum of Art also will have contemporary art from the Margulies Collection, photographs by late 20th-century photographer Garry Winogrand, 20th century paintings by famous modern artists and Greek and Roman antiquities. Admission prices for adults is $10, seniors, groups, military plus one guest $7.50, students $5, and children ages 6 and under free. A “pay what you will” fee will be offered every second Saturday of the month from 9 to 11 am and every Thursday from 5 to 9 pm. There are two nearby city parking garages, Poe and new Curtis Hixon garage at the Museum, and several public parking lots on or nearby Ashley St.
