Walking Tour of Historic St. Petersburg 26 December
If you want to try something else besides hitting the stores to return presents or looking for the after Christmas sales, then how about learning the history of St. Pete. St. Petersburg Preservation is sponsoring a walking tour of the historic Downtown, Old Northeast, and the historic Kenwood neighborhood for a bungalow tour. The historic Downtown reflects early St. Petersburg’s success in transforming itself into one of the best known tourist destinations in the United States. Although the remaining resources are extremely varied, ranging from frame garage apartments to grand Gothic Revival churches, most were built to serve and/or impress winter visitors. This dedication to the tourist industry changed St. Petersburg from a fishing village to a major American city in the first half of the 20th century. After the tour of the waterfront, everyone will board a tolley to the Kenwood neighborhood. The Kenwood Historic District is a 375-acre residential area best known for its historic bungalows. However, it contains a variety of residential architectural styles including Frame and Masonry Vernacular, Craftsman Bungalow, Minimal Traditional, Tudor Revival, Mediterranean Revival, Colonial Revival, Ranch, Prairie, American Foursquare, Dutch Colonial Revival, Mission, and International. It starts at 10 am on Saturday with everyone meeting at Central Avenue and Second Street. There is a $5 suggested donation, which includes bus tokens. St. Petersburg Preservation (SPP) works to preserve St. Pete’s important sites and structures and foster an appreciation of St. Petersburg’s shared heritage and culture.
