MacDill Happenings

The Florida State Fair is now open in Tampa.  The theme this year is “It’s Showtime, Baby, The 2008 Florida State Fair is Fit for a King”.  Check out the daily highlights of the fair at their webpage.  See all that Florida has to offer at one spot, see the carnival rides, farm animals and try out the food!   It’s not too far from MacDill AFB and easily accessible near I-4 and I-75. Tickets bought in advance are $6 for 12 yrs old and above, $4 for 11-6 yrs old.  Age 5 and below are free.

Listen to the Florida Orchestra Masterworks Concert this Friday at the Mahaffey Theater in downtown St Petersburg.  Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana will be presented.  This popular classical piece of music has been part of many modern movies due to its eternal depth of feeling.  This piece sounds exceptional well due to the large size of the Florida Orchestra.  Ticket prices are $21-$56 and can be purchased online. The concert starts at 8pm. 

Celebrate Mardi Gras every Saturday night until 19 Apr at Universal Studios in Orlando.  The streets will be filled beads, live music and a grand parade!  Listen to legendary bands and enjoy the music and the cuisine of “The Big Easy”.  You can get your discount tickets at the MacDill AFB ITT.  Don’t forget that your military ID will get you a 10% discount at most resturaunts in the City Walk at Universal Studios.

Watch Hats! a play inspired by the stories and experiences of the Red Hat Society.  It is a story of a lady who is getting ready to face the inevitable BIG Five-o.  This show features original music by a team of Grammy, Golden Globe, and Tony Award-winning songwriters.  The running time is about 90 minutes with no intermission.  It is playing now until 27 Apr.  Performances are Tues. 7:30 p.m., Wed. 7:30 p.m., Thurs. 7:30 p.m., Fri. 7:30 p.m., Sat. 2 and 7:30 p.m., Sun. 2 and 7:30 p.m.  There is no 7:30 p.m. show on Sat., Feb. 23.  There is a 2 p.m. show on Tues., April 1.  The ticket price is $29.50.

If you want to learn more about your education benefits and educational opportunities on MacDill AFB, stop by the MacDill AFB Education and Training Center. There is a Lunch and Learn class on VA Education Benefits on 21 Feb from 1130-1300. But you can stop in any time to learn about on base schools, tuition assistance and tests like the ACT and the SAT. Get your tickets now at Ticketmaster to watch Van Halen at the St. Pete Times Forum on 18 Feb at 7pm.  Tickets are priced from $49.50-$149.50.  The St. Pete Times Forum is located in the Channelside district of Tampa and only a 15 minute drive from MacDill AFB.  Parking is available at Channelside and in various lots near the St. Pete Times Forum.  There are also of plenty of great places to eat at Channelside before the concert. 

Get ready for the Valentine Craft Bazaar at the MacDill AFB Marina. It takes place on 6 Feb from 10am to 5pm. You can shop or sell your crafts. There will be many beautiful crafts and homemade goods to you can give to your sweetie for Valentines Day or just buy something for yourself. If you have something that you want to sell, then a table only costs $8 to rent. Call the FamCamp office at 840-6916 for more info.

Universal Studios at Orlando offers a 10% discount on food purchases at some restaurants at City Walk with a military ID card. Discount tickets can be purchased at the MacDill AFB ITT. Tickets at ITT costs $72 for an adult and $62 for ages 3-9. Tickets at the gate cost $82.95 for an adult and $72.95 for ages 3-9. Save some money by not purchasing tickets at the park and time by not waiting in the ticket purchase line at the park by buying your tickets early at ITT.
