Watch the movies at the MacDill AFB Theater this Friday and Saturday. On Friday at 7pm is Charlie Wilson’s War starring Tom Hanks. On Saturday at 3pm is Alvin and the Chipmunks, a great movie for kids of all ages. At 7pm on Saturday is the action movie Alien Vs. Predator. Ticket cost is $3.25 for all ages. A meduim popcorn and drink is only $4!
Every Wednesday from 10am to noon, the New Mom’s Support Group gives new moms the chance to discuss issues about being a new mom. The support group meets in Old Hyde Park Village at Tampa General Hospital’s Community Health Education Center, upper level, 740 S. Village Circle, Tampa.
Sign up the Career by Design workshop at the MacDill Family Resource Center in Brandon. The workshop will help assess and define career interests, values, motivation skills, and career goals. It can be a great help in determining long term goals and career fulfillment. The workshop will be held on 11 Feb from 1pm to 4:30 pm. Call 655-9281 for reservations.
The MacDill AFB Thrift Shop has a great deal on a wide variety of items from clothing to books to furniture to bikes to sporting goods. It is open Tue, Wed and Fri from 10am to 2pm and the first Saturday of each month from 9am to 1pm. Items are accepted for consignment on Tue and Fri from 10am to noon and on Sat from 9am to 11am. The Thrift Shop is located next to the Base Post Office. They are always looking for volunteers to help out.
The GEICO Military Division of the 2008 Publix Super Markets Gasprilla Distance Classic Races is open to active, retired and former military personnel. The 5k and 15k races are run on 9 Feb. The marathon and half-marathon races are run on 10 Feb. GEICO is sponsoring awards for military entrants for: Top 3 Men Overall, Top 3 Women Overall, 1st Masters Male, 1st Master Female, 1st Grand Master Male and 1st Grand Master Female. Registration can be done online up to 3 Feb with a small late fee, so register as soon as you can to avoid a late fee. Make sure when you register online or by mail that you mark The GEICO Military Division on your application.
There are other events going on in Tampa besides Gasprilla. Matchbox Twenty will perform at the St. Pete Times Forum on 26 Jan Saturday. The concert starts at 7:30pm. Alanis Morissette and Mute Math are special guests. The MacDill AFB ITT has tickets available at a reduced price. ITT is located in the MacDill AFB BX Mall near the Food Court. Plan your weekend now and get ready for more Gasprilla events by watching the Parade of Pirates this Saturday from 2pm to 5pm. Come watch the over than 130 parade entries including elaborate floats, marching bands and the Krewes. There will be plenty of food vendors along the route. It will be crowded so make sure you arrive early to get a good spot. The start of the parade route is only 5 miles from the Bayshore Gate at MacDill AFB. The parade begins at Bay to Bay Blvd and Bayshore Blvd. It continues north along Bayshore Blvd to the Platt St Bridge, turns east on Channelside Dr then north on Florida Ave. It turns east onto Jackson and ends at Jackson and Marion St.
